I came across this Classic Volvo 1800E. It’s in Vermont, but it has a New York MV-37 title. That means it has been abandoned. this title has been issued to allow scrappers and dismantlers to buy the car, to disassemble it. As I understand it, if you can track down the original title you can get it titled. Otherwise you’d have to go about some back door way of re-titling it in another state. Otherwise this car will likely end up in pieces. Dismantlers and Scrappers would be the only ones legally able to buy the car in NY. The good news might be that it is already in VT, but being sold from NY. Thus it could be possible to buy the car, and get it titled someplace a little more friendly.

Unfortunately I am at work, so a link is the best I can provide. Uploading images is not allowed.

Anyway, I hope I am mistaken on my understanding of NY law in this mater. More importantly I think this car needs a good home, and can be saved from vultures. OK, maybe harsh words, as most scrappers and dismantlers are likely car lovers, and hopefully will respect this car enough to find a way.

Appears that it started as a yellow/gold 1800E.

That could look very nice if restored.

It is... but unless you have a business license already, it could be difficult to get everything in place. Although you can use a broker to bid, they’ll charge you to bid for you.

I am really curious what the reserve is. It could keep the car on the market a little longer.

Nice, although I like it's current red better... but I do have sympathies to restoring cars to an original color. The Red does make it look a little Italian.

Eh, I have a brother-in-law that owned an 1800 in Rutland (not this one). It was nice on the outside but a total rust nightmare underneath. It’s possible it is the way it is because it can no longer pass safety inspection.

My wife has an aunt and uncle in Rutland. I have a friend with a business account.....

I hate the fact I have no more room....

Does the MV-37 title specifically mean abandoned. Usually the cars labeled for dismantle or scrap only are that way for a very good reason.

Also, if it’s being sold at Copart it’s likely well polished garbage. I’ve bought way too many cars from them.

My understanding is that the MV-37 title it mostly for abandoned cars. Basically in case in which the title and owner can not be located.

And yes, generally most anything on Copart is best suited for scrappers, I don’t understand going there looking for a good deal, unless they do not understand copart mostly sells cars that have been written off by someone. That said a few of the cars are good candidates for flipping or restoration projects, but I would imagine it a very rare find to find something in good condition.

Due to the age of this car, even if it has lots of hidden issues, it seems like it would be a good project or restoration car.

It might be worth looking into if it could ever be re-titled. I’ve bought a number cars from Copart that I successfully fixed up and sold from profit, but over the years their company’s (and seller’s) values have steadily declined. Now it’s mostly dumping grounds for cars that are prettied up to look good enough online, but terrible in reality. Good for parts if you calculate in the fees, but not much else.
